Yoga in the Iyengar tradition with Laurel Thomas
Scoliosis is a three dimensional spinal curvature, characterized by lateral expression. Yoga is one of the more successful methods of pain management for people with scoliosis. Iyengar Yoga in particular, with its precision, lends itself to addressing the many needs a person with scoliosis may encounter over the arc of their lifetime. Adaptive before adaptive became a byword, Iyengar yoga frames the practitioner's body and helps bring relief by strengthening weaker muscles, lengthening tight muscles and tissues, while creating structural stability.
Laurel turned to Yoga in 1995 seeking an alternative to surgery for her scoliosis. That success led her to Pune, India to train directly with B.K.S. Iyengar, and his daughter Geeta, for an intensive five-year study. Laurel is certified a Junior Intermediate II, by B.K.S. Iyengar since 2009. She shares her joy of physical freedom, and infectious humor in her classes and workshops.
